Airport terminal modernization project at Lehigh Valley International Airport is among the first of thousands of projects supported by President Biden’s infrastructure law to be funded, constructed, and completed.

Allentown, PA — Last Friday Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg traveled to Allentown, Pennsylvania, where he celebrated the ribbon-cutting ceremony for a terminal modernization project at Lehigh Valley International Airport. The project will modernize and expand the security area, helping the airport in the fast-growing region accommodate more passengers in the years to come.

The Lehigh Valley airport project was supported by a $5 million grant from the Airport Terminals Grant Program — a new initiative created by President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law that is supporting airport modernization projects across the country. U.S. Congresswoman Susan Wild, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, Lehigh Valley-Northampton Airport Authority Executive Director Thomas Stoudt and other community and labor leaders joined Secretary Buttigieg to celebrate the project’s completion.

Over $2 billion in funding has already been announced through the Airport Terminals Program for airports of all sizes around the country. The program is representative of the Biden-Harris Administration’s Investing in America agenda, which is growing our economy from the bottom up and middle-out, rebuilding America’s infrastructure, and creating tens of thousands of good-paying jobs that don’t require a college education.

“It’s a significant relief, we can breathe a little easier,” [Executive Director Tom Stoudt] said Friday as he walked in the middle of the new building. “This project wasn’t just a nice-to-have addition for our airport, it was critical infrastructure to not only continue to serve our current demand but to serve our growing region.”

“It’s also a very special project for me, because we have now announced about 37,000 projects that are benefiting from funding in the infrastructure law,” [Buttigieg] said. “Some of them have gotten as far as getting the funding agreement through and having money with a smaller number of them that have already had dirt fly.

“But this is the very first one that I’ve been able to be at where we are celebrating the completion of a project that was supported partly through those dollars and now we’re going to see more and more where this came from by flying to construction sites across the country.”
